Erie County MERS, Medical Emergency
Radio Service, 25th Anniversary
Celebration

5/14/2001

The equipment and procedures developed and used for the first Extended Grand Rounds event were used the next business day at ECMC for the Erie County MERS 25th Anniversary Celebration. Guests in the hospital staff dining room were able to view and participate in the event without trying to crowd into the Control Center where it was also being broadcast live by local television stations. Unlike the local stations, our Internet broadcasts and on-demand replays were available around the world!

Here's the nerve center of the Erie County Medical Emergency Radio Service (MERS) at ECMC. On Monday 5/14, right after our first success with Extended Grand Rounds, MERS had a 25th anniversary celebration. Of course, we had to try out our new skills at that event too. So it was carried live at 768 Kbps to the staff dining room where guests assembled.

All the space in the MERS control room was taken up by officials and cameramen from local television stations.

Guests watched the proceedings on another floor on a 768 Kbps IP-video conference. You can just make out Dr. Ellis's new system to the left of the projection screen. 1.3 Mbps MPEG-1 streams were broadcast live and recorded for on-demand replay after the event. Live low-bandwidth Windows Media Player streams were also broadcast live.
