WNYPHN Discussion & Updates

David G. Ellis, MD, Chair

Requests for inclusion on the roster for the WNYPHN listserv and bona-fide requests for additional member contact information should be directed to David G. Ellis, MD, the working group Chair, Susan Ellis, who will  manage the roster, or Jim Whitlock for forwarding and handling.  Please include a brief statement of your background and interests.

20020315:

  • After due consultation with Tony Billittier and others, it seems our initial enthusiasm for chasing dark fiber based backbone connectivity in response to the CDC Bioterrorism related funding on the way was a bit premature.  Other grant components clearly also need to be addressed and while backbone IP connectivity for high quality interactive and streaming video will serve most of the objectives, the best we can expect in this first round will be a planning grant to enable retention of consulting services and to formulate a substantive backbone connectivity proposal.

  • We'll keep this list defined for the time being but do not expect much grant related traffic for awhile.  I've eliminated the discussion starter straw proposal from the Web pages we built but will save the material in case it's of value when detailed planning starts.  Contact me directly if you want any of it in the interim.

  • Those of you who have a need to review the CDC grant materials should contact Dave or Susan Ellis directly.

20020307:

  • A "listserv" email based discussion group has been created and populated with a preliminary list of members based upon attendance at Dr. Ellis' organizing meeting at ECMC on 3/4/2002.  Email posted to wnyphn-list@listserv.buffalo.edu will be re-distributed to all defined members.  Archives of all such traffic will be maintained by the listserv engine and will be accessible to all members.  Contact Jim Whitlock for assistance with listserv usage.  In the event of listserv problems contact either Jim Whitlock or Brian Murphy for resolution.

  • Susan Ellis has asked that you all consider others whose thinking and participation might benefit our efforts.  Please check with such individuals first to see if they are willing to join us and then forward their contact information and email address to Dave Ellis, Susan Ellis or Jim Whitlock for inclusion.

  • A temporary WNYPHN Web site has been created within the WNY-HPNVI site.  Meeting minutes, PowerPoint presentations, proposals, agendas, calendars and discussion items will be posted as soon as practical after receipt.   Please forward any such materials to David G. Ellis, Susan Ellis, or Jim Whitlock for forwarding and handling.

  • I've taken the liberty of posting a few thoughts and a straw proposal as a discussion starter.  Please feel free to comment either directly or to our listserv.  -- jow

20020304:

  • The first organizational and planning meeting was held at Erie County Medical Center at the invitation of Dr. David G. Ellis.  Dave's invitation and statement of purpose follow:

    From: "Ellis, David Dr." <DEllis@ecmc.edu>
    Sent: Thursday, February 28, 2002 12:35 AM
Subject: Task Force for Development of WNY Public Health and Safety Video Data Network

For quite a while, we have been talking about using our developing internet video, telemedicine and distance learning technologies to address the issues of video medical command, police monitoring, distance education for providers, just-in-time bioterrorism education, etc. We have several resources that have been in the works including the Cheektowaga Police/Fire/EMS Training Academy, the ECMC Smith Auditorium, the SMART Vehicle, MERS Video 911, the WNY MMRS Plan  that we have talked about making video capable. Within the last year, Erie County has put a significant amount of support behind these venues and systems and lately there appear to be potential funding sources that might provide support for a video network that focuses on these issues and the overall issues of broadband connectivity for our regional assets.

We are holding an organizational, strategic planning meeting regarding these issues on Monday, March 4, 2002 in the Emergency Department conference room at ECMC at 8:30am. Everyone receiving this email is invited to attend along with other individuals you might feel have significant input to this process. I will try and follow up this announcement with a draft copy of a white paper and PowerPoint presentation we are putting together to summarize the proposal.

Thank-you for your interest on short notice and hope to see you there.

This is a Web site developmental model.  The Web site will likely always be a few steps behind or ahead of the design sketched out in an accompanying design planning outline.  This site will be viewed best using IE 5+.    Please direct any and all comments to:  whitlock@buffalo.edu
