WNY-Partnership for Regional Internetworking
Agenda
Wednesday, September 19th, 2001

The next WNY Partnership for Regional Internetworking meeting will take place from 10:00 AM until noon at 120 Clemens Hall  on the North Campus of the University at Buffalo.  Samuel Clemens Hall is Bldg # 6 on the campus map. Paid Visitor Parking available in Fronczak Lot B.  Coffee and snacks are being generously provided by Veraview, one of the primary corporate sponsors of the WNY-HPNVI.

The general presentation and discussion focus of the meeting will be regional networks and dark fiber build overviews and issues.  We'll try to clarify our sense of promising solutions to some of the issues raised during our first meeting: achieving seamless regional internetworking and eliminating the "Information Taxi-Rides" that empty our pockets and lose our baggage.  Those of you who were not able to attend the first meeting may want to make a quick pass through the PowerPoint presentation we used as a basis for discussion.

We will have at least two distinguished remote on-line guests during the first half of the meeting for questions and discussions related to regional/national Dark Fiber build activity in both North America and Europe:  Bill St. Arnaud, Senior Director Network Projects at CANARIE Inc (the Canadian Internet2 corollary) and Bart Kerver with the Innovation Management Group at SURFNet (another Internet2 corollary) in the Netherlands.

Bill St. Arnaud is best known to most of us actively working with high performance networked video for his editorship and reviews in the CANARIE NEWS, a must-subscribe listserv (see our Links & Lists page for how to subscribe) that, among other things, is the best single source of news and information on Municipal/Regional Dark Fiber build activity in North America, and possibly the world.  He also wrote an exquisitely good FAQ on Dark Fiber that we hope you will at least peruse before the meeting.  In fact, his entire on-line Library collection is well worth adding to your on-line bookshelves.   We're hoping that Bill will be able to give us a snapshot overview of some of the why's and how's of municipal and regional dark fiber builds along with engaging in any discussions that may be of interest to you.

Bart Kerver is a colleague of Egon Verharen, a familiar face to those of you who have been active with the WNY-HPNVI.  He works with Egon in the Innovation Management Group at SURFNet in the Netherlands and will provide some brief updates on Dark Fiber related activities in Europe.  While the regulatory, political and legal cultures may be substantially different, we find, globally, that we are all drawn by the same benefit potentials and application visions.  SURFNet has been a long-standing collaborative partner with us on virtually all of our major demonstration projects -- most recently our global Extended Medical Grand Rounds trials.

During the second half of the meeting we hope to have a presentation by Dr. Donald Jacobs, Associate Dean for Research & Technologies - Graduate School of Education and Director of The Center for Applied Technologies in Education (CATE).  Dr. Jacobs has been instrumental in developing videoconferencing based distance learning networks amongst the public schools in the WNY region.  The Regional Community Network (RCN), a new high performance IP network that includes well over a hundred new public schools and public benefit institutions is his latest accomplishment and will be the focus of his presentation to us.

2.  The Computer Science and Telecommunications Board (CSTB) is carrying out a
